Maximizing wellbeing can prove to be a challenge in the best of times. During an unprecedented pandemic, it has been even more difficult to manage!

One 2020 poll revealed that 53% of adults reported their mental health had been negatively impacted due to stress since the COVID-19 outbreak. That decline doesn’t just affect the respondent. It has a ripple effect on their colleagues, family members and business. In fact, the World Health Organization reported that anxiety costs the global economy $1 trillion USD each year in lost productivity.

After the ups and downs we experienced in 2020, I think it’s safe to say that each of us has a greater understanding of just how much stress can impact our abilities to successfully navigate work and life. Udemy’s 2021 Workplace Learning Trends Report revealed that organizations are increasingly focused on building productivity and wellness capabilities that help minimize burnout and support wellbeing. The relevance of these life skills to business needs has also been underscored by popular career sites like Indeed and The Muse.

As you prioritize talents to help your staff manage today’s challenges, consider focusing your training efforts on:

Delivering essential work-life capabilities to employees doesn’t have to be overly costly to realize impressive returns. I invite you to incorporate a number of the following recommendations to help employees develop the talents they need to support themselves and help your business thrive:

  1. Uncover opportunities from your benefits provider.
    Given the increasing focus on workplace wellness, many benefits providers are delivering a greater number of holistic wellbeing offerings. Partner with your benefits specialist to see what resources and programs may be at your employees’ fingertips or what may be available for a small investment.
  1. Invest in priority training opportunities.
    While budgets may be tight, it can make sense to hire an external expert or host trainings when you can realize a return on your investment.   1. Source and provide access to free online resources.
