SHRM ConferenceEmergenetics International’s Kelly Fullerton and Betsy Orton attended the 2014 SHRM Conference in Orlando, Florida. They reflect on the conference through an Emergenetics perspective:

The SHRM conference in Orlando featured great keynote speakers, a sprawling expo hall filled with vendors and a great performance by country music star, Tim McGraw!  Featured general session keynote speakers included Robin Roberts of Good Morning America, Pulitzer Prize Winning journalist Tom Friedman, Chairman and CEO of Yum Brands (KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut) David Novak with Former First Lady Laura Bush wrapping up the conference on Wednesday.

Each keynote speaker had an inspiring message to set the tone for the day.  Even though each speaker had a very different tone and message, each speech seemed to speak directly to the crowd with audience members sharing how much they enjoyed the speech leaving general session.  From leadership to inclusion, from personal tragedy to personal triumph, SHRM featured some of the best and brightest.

Breakout sessions covered a variety of topics.  Everything from compliance to leadership, employment to e-Learning.  Emergenetics is extremely proud of Associate Diane Lujan of Western Union, who was selected to speak at the conference this year.  Her presentation on how Western Union implemented Emergenetics E-Learning solutions was both well attended and well received.  Engagement was high, questions were flowing and ideas were shared, making for a great wrap up to Monday of the conference. SHRM Conference

The expo hall had a little bit of something for everyone.  Whether you were looking for new technology-based solutions to manage applicant tracking or fun ways to drive engagement and reward employees, you could find it at the expo.  We were particularly were intrigued by the new technology IBM is coming out with this fall.  By entering in your Twitter handle, it generates a profile that includes when you are the most active on the social media site, what topics you Tweet about the most, etc.  You know us, always interested in a profile!

The Blue pathways appreciated the efficiency of the conference.  Over 13,000 HR Professionals were in attendance however lines were minimal and signs were easy to follow.  The busses carrying attendees to and from hotels were well marked and on-time and it’s amazing how quickly the general session emptied.

The Green pathways appreciated the schedule of events which was both available on your phone and in a printed booklet.  You could find a session in the SHRM conference app and add it to you own personal schedule, making navigating a full day of sessions a breeze.

The Red pathways appreciated the numerous people with bright green SHRM shirts, all knowledgeable about where everything was located.  From sessions in far off wings of the conference center to the ever popular question, “Where can I find a boxed lunch”, these folks had the answers!

The Yellow pathways  enjoyed the variety of exhibitors in the expo hall.  Giant lollipops at the Careerbuilder booth, robots at the wellness plan booth, coffee and smoothie samples at the employee rewards sections.

SHRM ConferenceLots of idea sharing both in small and large groups to exercise both ends of the Expressiveness spectrum.  Whether you waited till everyone else had left the session or made a beeline for the coffee line, navigating the convention center was easy.  The SHRM conference app allowed all ends of the flexibility spectrum to find what they were looking for, whether they were focused on a specific topic (search sessions by topic) or wanted to see all the options (view all sessions).

SHRM is looking forward to welcoming the HR Community in Las Vegas next year with just as great of a lineup of speakers, sessions, entertainment and expo booths.
